2013 House Bill 5168: Facilitate DARTA operating Woodward streetcar

Public Act 246 of 2014

  1. Introduced by Rep. John Walsh (R) on December 4, 2013, to authorize the Detroit area regional transportation authority created by a 2012 law to enter agreements to operate a Woodward Avenue streetcar in Detroit with the entity authorized by 2008 law to create it. The bill would exempt this project from a provision requiring unanimous action by the DARTA board for any form of rail passenger service, and specify that Detroit and Wayne County would be responsible for covering the line's operating deficits (and not other communities in the RTA).
    • Referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on December 4, 2013.
      • Reported in the House on May 28, 2014, with the recommendation that the substitute (H-2) be adopted and that the bill then pass.

    • Amendment offered by Rep. Wayne Schmidt (R) on June 5, 2014, to establish that if enacted the bill will go into effect 90 days afterwards. The amendment passed by voice vote in the House on June 5, 2014.
