2016 House Bill 5475

Extend open records law to legislature

Introduced in the House

March 16, 2016

Introduced by Rep. Jason Sheppard (R-56)

To define the records that would be exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests to the state legislature. These include standard provisions regarding records dealing with security matters, active contract bidding processes, information of a personal nature or business proprietary records, records that would violate attorney-client privilege or involve ongoing litigation, etc. The bill would also exempt records of exchanges between a lawmaker and a constituent. Notably, the bill would exempt records held by the Republican and Democratic caucus staffs, including their communications and public relations operations. This is part of a package comprised of House Bills 5469 to 5478 that would extend the state’s open records law to the legislature.
