2011 Senate Bill 316: Require kindergartners be 5 on Sept. 1 (House Roll Call 443)
facebook  twitter

Passed 66 to 44 in the House on June 13, 2012, to require children to be age 5 by Sept. 1 to attend kindergarten, rather than by Dec. 1 under current law. This earlier age cut-off would be phased in one month at a time over three years, starting in 2013. A child who would have been eligible under the current requirements could still attend if the parents "opt in" by notifying the school by June 1. The phase-in was negotiated because school districts get money from the state for each kindergartner, whose numbers would be reduced during the transition period.

There is nothing like taxpayer funded day care for four, five, and six year old kids!

As a parent of two with early birthdates and an early childhood teacher I love this idea! Kindergarden is not what it used to be and they now attend a whole day. They learn how to read now in kindergarden and play less. Let your kid be a kid as they have there whole life to go to school and to be tired.  You can teach them so much at home and there is no need to rush kindregarden.  I personal will not be sending my children when they first turn five even if I can. They will both be more then ready!!

Did you read the bill?  If your son turns five in Nov. this year he STILL gets to go to kindergarten!  The process doesn't even start phasing in until 2013.
