facebook  twitter

Passed 104 to 1 in the House on September 19, 2012, to require coaches or other adults in charge to remove a student or young athlete from participation in a sports activity due to a suspected concussion until clearance is received from an "appropriate health professional." The bill would also require schools and youth sports associations to distribute specified educational materials about the nature and risk of concussion and head injury to coaches, young athletes and parents, and require parents and athletes to sign a statement indicating they have received and read them. The bill would not apply to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), which has separate concussion guidelines.

Re: 2012 House Bill 5697 (Establish athlete concussion “time out” criteria: )  by Matt73 on October 8, 2012

Athletic Trainers should be mandated in every high school that participates in organized sports as they are the most appropriate individuals to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion, they are skilled in preventing other serious injuries, and they can promote proper health and safety standards for our youth athletes.
