2004 House Bill 5553

Require sustainable forestry pilot projects

Introduced in the House

Feb. 17, 2004

Introduced by Rep. Rich Brown (D-110)

To require the Department of Natural Resources to establish four forest pilot project areas to be managed on scientific silvicultural specifications based on sustainable forestry principles. The department would contract out the management of the project area for three years, including the marking of timber, the harvesting of timber, and the reforestation of timber cutover areas. The bill is part of a legislative package comprised of House Bills 5552 to 5554, which would require state forest management to be based on sustainable forestry principles, and requires the state to seek forest certification from an independent third party organization.
