To permit labor unions to represent only those employees in a workplace who pay union dues. Under current law, a union that at some time had persuaded a majority of the employees in a particular workplace to agree to unionize must represent every employee. Before Michigan enacted a right-to-work law, every employee was also compelled to pay union dues of fees, but that is no longer the case. Under right-to-work, union officials often label workers who choose not to pay them “free riders,” because the union must still represent them. The bill would relieve unions of this duty.
