To require each dwelling unit in apartment buildings to be equipped with an automatic fire alarm system. Older buildings would be required to have systems installed within one year. The fire alarm could be battery operated. A building owner who violates the requirement would be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.
