2004 Senate Bill 1324

Boost enforcement of untaxed Indian cigarette sales

Introduced in the Senate

June 29, 2004

Introduced by Sen. Wayne Kuipers (R-30)

To require the Department of Treasury to increase enforcement of the sale of untaxed cigarettes by Indian tribes to non-tribal members. The department would be authorized to search for untaxed cigarettes being transported from tobacco wholesalers to tribal lands. Federally recognized Indian tribes are exempt from Michigan's tax laws, but most tribes voluntarily collect and remit the state cigarette tax. Several do not, however.

Referred to the Committee on Finance

July 1, 2004

Reported without amendment

With the recommendation that the bill pass.
