2004 Senate Bill 936

Introduced in the Senate

Jan. 29, 2004

Introduced by Sen. Michael Switalski (D-10)

To revise the eligibility standards for the state merit award scholarship for students who do well on the state MEAP test. The bill would add social studies to the test subjects on which eligibility is based. Social studies was excluded when the program was created because of a perception that this test is too “politically correct.” The bill would also eliminate provisions establishing eligibility for students who do not qualify based on MEAP scores in one or two areas, but do well on nationally recognized college admission or vocational education tests. It would eliminate the merit award scholarships for vocational or technical education programs, and eliminate the lesser awards for seventh and eighth graders who do well on some but not all of the MEAP subject area tests, leaving just the $500 award for those who do well on reading, writing, mathematics, and science, plus social studies.
