To repeal a sales tax exemption on the purchase or lease of motion pictures, so that cinema companies would pay the tax on movies shown in theaters. Also, to repeal the exemption from merchandise purchased by prison inmates in prison stores. This is one of $200 million in “revenue enhancement” or “tax expenditure” proposals included in Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s Fiscal Year 2005-2006 budget recommendation. Together with House Bill 4911, the motion picture provision would increase taxes paid by theaters approximately $20 million; the other measure would cost prisoners approximately $700,000.
