To reduce the maximum allowable noise levels for vehicles, and streamline the standards. The current law specifies different maximum sound levels depending on the speed of the vehicle. These range from 76 decibels for cars running at low speed to 90 decibels for heavy trucks on high-speed highways, with higher noise levels in stationary run-up tests measured a few feet from the vehicle. The revised and simplified limits are 80 decibels for cars and light trucks, and 83 decibels for heavy trucks and motorcycles, as measured 50 feet away from the vehicle.
