To give the governor the authority to designate a site, structure, or object that is deemed to have historic, scenic, or scientific interest as a Michigan natural landmark. The Department of Natural Resources would be required to try to acquire the landmark (by purchase or "gift;" the bill does not authorize condemnation), develop it, and operate it as a public attraction. If the governor decides this would create an "administrative burden," she could allow a private entity to operate the landmark. Altering, damaging or destroying a structure, object or site the governor has designated would be subject to a penalty of up to one year in jail and/or a $10,000 fine.
