Introduced
by
To increase the annual vehicle registration tax (license plate fee) by 50 percent, and by 60 percent for the portion of vehicle’s cost-when-new that was more than $30,000. The tax is levied on the basis of the value of a vehicle when it was new, regardless of the current value, and currently ranges from $30 for vehicles that cost less than $6,000 when new, to $148 for those costing $30,000 when new, plus $5 per $1,000 of additional new-car cost. These numbers would increase to $45, $222 and $8 respectively, with equivalent hikes for vehicles between $6,000 and $30,000. The new tax would be indexed to inflation, so would increase automatically in any year when the general price level rises.
