2007 House Bill 4957

Establish ID standards for state ID application

Introduced in the House

June 20, 2007

Introduced by Rep. David Agema (R-74)

To establish that only citizens or resident-aliens with lawful status would be allowed to get a Michigan state identification card, and limit the forms of identification accepted from the latter to non-foreign documents (such as Social Security cards) and/or official passports or visas. The bill would require the Secretary of State to validate Social Security numbers in real-time before issuing a an ID card, and also to verify with the issuing agency the validity of other forms of identification. It would also make the ID card of a non-citizen a different color, indicating that it is temporary, and that it expires when the person’s authorized stay in the U.S. expires. Foreign exchange students would not be allowed to get a state ID card.
