2007 Senate Bill 219

Mandate utility alternative energy use and charges

Introduced in the Senate

Feb. 20, 2007

Introduced by Sen. Roger Kahn (R-32)

To require electricity suppliers to immediately generate or acquire 4 percent of the electricity they sell with renewable sources, at least 1 percent of which must be solar. This would increase to 7 percent of power sold by 2015. The Michigan Public Service Commission could establish a system of energy credits that providers could use to meet the new standards, and would be authorized to waive the mandate if renewable sources of power are not available in the amounts necessary to comply. The bill would allow utilities to charge higher rates to cover the additional costs of using such alternative energy sources.
