2007 Senate Bill 653

Establish ID standards for drivers license application

Introduced in the Senate

July 25, 2007

Introduced by Sen. Alan Sanborn (R-11)

To establish that only citizens or resident-aliens with lawful status would be allowed to get a Michigan drivers license, and limit the forms of identification accepted from the latter to non-foreign documents (such as Social Security cards) and/or official passports or visas. The bill would require the Secretary of State to validate Social Security numbers in real-time before issuing a license, and also to verify with the issuing agency the validity of other forms of identification. It would also make the license of a non-citizen a different color, indicating that it is temporary, and that it expires when the person’s authorized stay in the U.S. expires.
