2007 Senate Bill 698

Mandate burying certain electric transmission lines

Introduced in the Senate

Aug. 30, 2007

Introduced by Sen. Valde Garcia (R-22)

To require electric transmission lines that run for more than five miles in a township with a population between 10,000 and 15,000 to be placed underground. The bill was introduced following a dispute between residents in Hartland Township and ITC Transmission company regarding a 21 mile line approved for parts of Oakland and Livingston counties. Residents wanted the seven miles of line crossing the township to be buried underground, which is not required by state law and would add some $29 million to the cost, according to ITC.
