2009 Senate Bill 566

Revise proof of insurance citation details

Introduced in the Senate

May 12, 2009

Introduced by Sen. Dennis Olshove (D-9)

Revise proof of insurance citation details to require that a ticket given to a motorist for failing to have proof of insurance must contain a notice that the person can have the violation dismissed by providing proof of insurance to the court before the appearance date set for the violation, and, if the person fails to provide proof of insurance, that the citation may result in the assessment of a “driver responsibility fee” (“bad driver tax”) which must be paid for two consecutive years. These very expensive fees were originally adopted in 2003 to raise revenue so as avoid spending cuts in that year’s and subsequent state government budgets.
