This is one of a number of such bills, and affects Berrien, Calhoun, Genesee, Ingham, Macomb, Monroe, Muskegon, Saginaw, St. Clair, and Washtenaw Counties.
Referred to the Committee on Judiciary
Reported without amendment
Without amendment and with the recommendation that the bill pass.
Substitute offered
by
To replace the previous version of the bill with one that revises which judgeships are eliminated in the affected districts.
The substitute passed by voice vote
Amendment offered
by
To require a bill that also reduces the number of Court of Appeal judges from 28 to 24 to become law before this bill can, and also require a number of other regular court consolidation bills to become law. The Court of Appeals issue has triggered partisan controversy, with Democrats accusing Republicans of wanting to "game" the process in favor of judges appointed by a GOP governor over ones appointed by a Democratic governor (all appointed judges must still get elected at the next election for the particular judgeship).
The amendment failed by voice vote
