The executive recommendation for an “omnibus” K-12 school aid, community college and university budget bill for the fiscal year that begins Oct 1, 2017. A separate budget authorizes the rest of state government spending (Senate Bill 218). This bill would appropriate $14.302 billion for K-12 public schools, compared to $14.161 billion originally appropriated for the prior year. It also appropriates $1.637 billion for state universities, compared to $1.582 billion the prior year. Community colleges would get $398 million, vs. $395 million the prior year. All told it comes to $16.337 billion for education, of which $1.838 billion is federal money and $14.499 billion comes from state taxpayers.<br> Combined, the Governor proposes to spend $56.267 billion next year, vs. $54.443 billion originally approved for the current year.
