To establish procedures for requiring county medical examiners to use “virtual autopsy” methods if a relative of a deceased individual objects to a real autopsy and a court determines that a “virtual” one is sufficient. A virtual autopsy uses sophisticated medical scanning tools instead of dissection. Current law requires an autopsy if a death is caused by violence, is unexpected, or if an attending physician is unable to determine the cause of death.
