2021 Senate Bill 787

Impose employer mandate to accommodate nursing mothers

Introduced in the Senate

Dec. 9, 2021

Introduced by Sen. Erika Geiss (D-6)

To mandate that an employer must grant an employee who is a mother nursing a baby “breaks as necessary” to do so or to express breast milk for her nursing child, with a place to do the latter that meets requirement specified in the bill. Violations would subject an employer of fines up to $2,500, and a court could also impose damage awards on employers. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission would be empowered to receive, initiate, investigate, conciliate, adjust, dispose of, issue charges, and hold hearings on complaints.
