2022 House Bill 6168

Mandate legislators disclose cost of taxpayer-funded mailings

Introduced in the House

June 2, 2022

Introduced by Rep. Steven Johnson (R-72)

To mandate that state representatives and senators disclose the amount they spend on taxpayer-funded bulk-mailings to constituents from their legislative offices, which would be posted on a state website. The disclosure would also have to disclose the basis on which households are selected to receive a particular mailing, which generally depends on a resident's party identification and voting history. Note: Michigan legislators get a set amount to run their legislative offices, and have discretion on whether to spend more on staff or on constituent mailings.
