A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled “The revised school code,” by amending sections 1278a, 1278b, and 1278c (MCL 380.1278a, 380.1278b, and 380.1278c), sections 1278a and 1278b as amended by 2022 PA 105 and section 1278c as amended by 2018 PA 242, and by adding section 1278f.
The bill proposes a comprehensive education framework that includes a minimum of 4 credits in mathematics (with algebra II and options for career and technical education), 3 credits in social science (covering U.S. history, world history, economics, and civics), at least 1 credit in health and physical education (with alternatives for extracurricular activities and an option for a 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration training course), and 1 credit in visual, performing, or applied arts. It also mandates at least 2 credits in a language other than English, recognizing American Sign Language and online courses, and introduces a new 1/2 credit requirement in personal finance, which can count towards mathematics, arts, or language requirements, and can be fulfilled through approved career and technical education programs.
