Whereas, Michigan is home to more than 40,000 individuals claiming Filipino heritage who have made significant contributions to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our great state; and
Whereas, October is recognized as Filipino American History Month because it was October 1587 in Morro Bay, California, that the first known Filipinos arrived in America; and
Whereas, Since Filipino immigrants first established their roots in Michigan, they have emerged as influential figures in every aspect of our communities, enriching our educational institutions, businesses, civic life, and social groups throughout the state; and
Whereas, Filipino Americans in Michigan have enriched our state’s cultural landscape through their art, music, and cuisine, sharing their traditions, celebrations, and heritage, thereby promoting a deeper appreciation for the diversity that Michigan proudly represents; and
Whereas, Filipino Americans have been an integral part of Michigan’s history for many decades, with a strong presence in various fields, including healthcare, education, business, the arts, and community leadership; and
Whereas, These contributions reflect a culture which values and prioritizes family and community, which takes pride in hard work and diligence, and which celebrates its collective identity; and
Whereas, Thanks in no small part to the efforts of Michigan’s Filipino Americans, the United States continues to strengthen its relationship with the Filipino American community and to continue to promote the culture, values, history, and traditions of the Philippines; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare October 2023 as Filipino American History Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That with the declaration of Filipino American History Month, we express our profound appreciation and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Filipino Americans, who have significantly enhanced Michigan’s economy, civic engagement, and cultural heritage.
