A bill to amend 1976 PA 453, entitled “Elliott-Larsen civil rights act,” by amending section 602 (MCL 37.2602), as amended by 1992 PA 258, and by adding section 202b.
The proposed legislation mandates that employers with 50 or more employees at a single work site in Michigan must display a notice informing employees of their rights regarding equal pay. This notice must include statements about the illegality of wage discrimination based on various personal characteristics under both federal and state law, and provide contact information for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. The notice must be in a form approved by the department, which may also add additional information about employee rights. Employers failing to comply may face a civil fine of up to $100. Additionally, the bill amends the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act by requiring the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to maintain a telephone line and a public website for reporting violations, ensuring anonymity for individuals reporting or assisting in investigations of alleged violations. The department is also tasked with following specific procedures to protect the anonymity of individuals involved in investigations related to Article 2 of the act.
