A bill to amend 1939 PA 280, entitled “The social welfare act,” by amending section 57i (MCL 400.57i), as amended by 2011 PA 131.
The bill requires landlords participating in the department's rent vendoring program to certify that their dwelling units are free from conditions that could facilitate the spread of communicable diseases, are fit for human habitation, and are safe from hazards due to poor repair or construction. Landlords who violate housing codes or are delinquent on property taxes will be terminated from the program. The bill also safeguards tenants from eviction solely because of the landlord's termination from the program and permits tenants to seek legal recourse if evicted in violation of this provision. Additionally, the bill mandates the department to provide and make accessible a specific form related to the truth in renting act.
