A bill to amend 1954 PA 116, entitled “Michigan election law,” by amending sections 93, 94, 98, 133, 134, and 138 (MCL 168.93, 168.94, 168.98, 168.133, 168.134, and 168.138), sections 93 and 133 as amended by 2012 PA 276.
House Bill 5791 would amend the filing process for candidates for federal office, allowing candidates for U.S. Senate or Congress the option to pay a non-refundable filing fee in lieu of submitting nominating petitions. For U.S. Senate, the filing fee would be $5,000 payable to the Michigan Secretary of State. For U.S. House, the filing fee would be $1,000. Candidates in multi-county districts would pay the fee to the Secretary of State, while candidates in single-county districts would pay the fee to that county's clerk.
