2024 Senate Bill 796

Education: school districts; letter grade system for ranking public schools; provide for.

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled “The revised school code,” (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1280h.

Mackinac Center Analysis

SB 796 amends the Revised School Code by requiring the department of education to create a letter grade system for evaluating the performance of every public school in the state. It would assign letter grades to schools using score ranges from the Michigan School Index system or other system in compliance with the requirements of the federal Every Child Succeeds Act. Each school's letter grades would be made publicly available on the department's website and each school's website. This aligns with our priority to hold public schools, as tax-funded entities, accountable to rigorous academic standards that are transparently enforced.
