Whereas, Fred Bear worked for Chrysler in Detroit before joining Ford Motor Company as a wood carver, crafting cabinets for radio dashboards and later relocating to Grayling, Michigan; and
Whereas, In 1933, Fred Bear founded Bear Archery in Grayling, Michigan, which became one of the largest archery manufacturers in the world; and
Whereas, Fred Bear is widely regarded as a pioneer in the archery community; and
Whereas, As a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation, Fred Bear promoted responsible hunting practices that respect the environment, wildlife, and fellow archers; and
Whereas, Fred Bear’s legacy extends beyond archery. He became a cultural icon among outdoor enthusiasts, was featured in the iconic song, “Fred Bear,” and numerous films highlighting Michigan’s great outdoors; and
Whereas, The commitment of Fred Bear to ethical hunting practices and conservation has also inspired countless individuals to appreciate and respect the natural world; and
Whereas, March 5, 2025 marks the 123rd anniversary of Fred Bear’s birth; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body commemorate March 5, 2025, as Fred Bear Day; and be it further
Resolved, That in recognition of Fred Bear’s contributions to archery and conservation, we commit to upholding these values to ensure that his legacy continues to thrive in our actions.
