2025 Senate Resolution 5

Whereas, Michigan is home to a diverse population of Michiganders who contribute to its cultural, economic, and social vibrancy, including its Muslim American residents; and

Whereas, Muslim Americans have been an integral part of the United States’ history and development since its founding, with contributions to fields such as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), medicine, law, arts, education, business, and public service; and

Whereas, With approximately 273,734 Muslims living in Michigan alone, our state is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim American communities in the United States with deep roots in cities such as Dearborn, Hamtramck, Detroit, and beyond; and

Whereas, Muslim Americans play a vital role in Michigan’s growth and prosperity, from automotive innovation to entrepreneurship, and their contributions continue to enrich our state in countless ways; and

Whereas, Muslim American communities in Michigan reflect a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, including people of Arab, Asian American and Pacific Islander, African, and other ancestries, making Muslims the most ethnically diverse faith community; and

Whereas, Michigan’s Muslim Americans are leaders in promoting interfaith understanding, civic engagement, and community service, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society; and

Whereas, The designation of January as Muslim American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Muslim Americans while fostering greater understanding and appreciation for the cultural diversity that strengthens Michigan; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body recognize January 2025 as Muslim American Heritage Month. We encourage all citizens to learn and celebrate the rich heritage, history, achievements, and contributions of Muslim Americans to Michigan and our nation.
