To allow the Detroit school district to have all-boy or all-girl schools if a comparable co-ed school and a comparable single-gender school for pupils of the opposite sex are also made available, and if the single-gender option is completely voluntary. Senate Bill 1296 applies the same provisions to schools in the rest of the state.
